esmart libraries

A very informative page on safety and privacy in libraries: http://www.esmartlibraries.org.au/Pages/default.aspx

Remember folks- it costs nothing to register your library with eSmart, so why not do it? :)

Winnie The Pooh read by A.A. Milne (about 5 minutes)

no playing favourites here

A good article on why teachers everywhere must never, ever, have a 'favourite' student: http://bit.ly/VQ6Vxf

I personally do not believe in 'favourite' students, as it leads to the 'favourite' being a spoiled brat and some other poor student being singled out for trouble.

Don't you also think that favouritism is unfair?

Margie Anderson (OAM) and Jane Garner (OA), 2 of the wonderful teachers at Victoria University's Diploma of Library Studies has an idea that we should design a Little Free Library for Library Studies students and staff; when she discussed the possibility of such a thing on the Facebook VU Library studies 2014 page, a few students offered suggestions...

L*** O* Libstudies- Not a carpenter, but got a couple of books to donate :)
Jane Garner- That's a start!
S*** Dewey- We might need to go on a class trip to savers and see if we can find something!
S***** Librejo- The 'free' section on gumtree is a good place to look. I got a free roll top desk off of there; http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/caulfield/other-furniture/2x-bookcase-cabinet/1053923576
Jane Garner- That is a bit fabulous S***** Librejo. Does anyone have a truck????
C****** W*****- I might be able to come up with something :) what do you think of some old school lockers that we can modify????
Jane Garner- That would be fantastic!!! We could practice categorising books to go in different lockers according to topic!

We could be creative you know folks... old cabinets, old chest chairs, even old fridges or microwaves just to be uber-improvising!!!!!!!!!!!

Barnyard cake

Ingredients:
2 packets buttercake mix or make 2 buttercakes
2 or more quantities Vienna cream
Green and blue food colouring
Cocoa powder
Red nail polish
farmyard toys
tinfoil
bits of hard cardboard
bullets

Make cakes according to directions on packet (or make 2 homemade buttercakes according to a recipe), pour into a large baking tray or 2 small square baking trays for 30-35 minutes for the small pans and 50 minutes for the larger pan or until cakes are cooked through when tested with a skewer, at 180oC.

Colour two thirds of the vienna cream with green food colouring; ice the cakes with this to represent grass. Tint half of the remaining cream brown with cocoa; make a mud puddle with this and line with chocolate bullets. Tint the other half blue; use this icing to make a fresh water puddle.

Using hard cardboard, make a farm stable and paint with red nail polish and place at one corner of the cake. Place farm animals on the finished cake; a pig would go well in the mud puddle, some ducks would go well in the freshwater lake, and so forth.

Enjoy your cake.

This recipe is just a rough guide only!

Disability discrimination still alive in 2014

Our social media teacher, Margie Anderson, had a run-in with the nasty folks from Hisense Arena recently, as they did not help with assisting her and her severely disabled son with accessing their seats for the 'Disney On Ice' show.

At least he finally got his wish and was able to see Buzz Lightyear a few days later! :)

starving for a new train

I am fortunate enough to have the Metro 'Notify' app, which can notify me of any changes/disruptions in the train network.

One 'update' on the Werribee and Frankston lines is that they are currently having works done on them for the 'Bayside Rail Project', and upon doing some research, I have read that this is so they can have new trains (XTrapolis) on their lines, just like the South Morang/Hurstbridge/Alamein/Belgrave/Glen Waverley/Lilydale lines have enjoyed for the past 10-12 years. Of course these trains were first made 10 years ago, and more are being made in this style today.

Furthermore, I have read that Cranbourne/Pakenham customers will also be receiving these trains, and I think that the Sunbury line will too. But what about the Upfield/Craigieburn/Sandringham customers? Why can't we have these trains as well?

I know that 10-12 years ago, the Upfield/Broadmeadows (now Craigieburn)/Sydenham (now Sunbury)/Werribee/Williamstown/Sandringham/Frankston/Cranbourne/Pakenham lines were grouped under M-Train and given dodgy Siemens carriages. I feel that these are always filthy, regularly stop notifying customers what the next destination is via the speaker, have had many braking problems in the past, etc, so why can't we get the XTrapolis trains and not be tortured with these ones?

Or is it a case of 'Northern Suburbs people don't matter'? HELLO!!! WE MATTER!!! WHY ARE THERE NO NEW SIEMENS CARRIAGES? WAKE UP!!! IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE DODGY! JUST GIVE US BLOODY XTRAPOLIS CARRIAGES PLEASE! THEY'RE BETTER LOOKING, HAVE FEWER PROBLEMS, FIT MORE PEOPLE IN, ETC, ETC! Bloody Metro and State Governments! Oh yes, and give us Craigieburn customers express services too! It'll make the trip quicker!

We also need more railway tracks, train stations, tram extensions, faster trains/trams/buses, more bus services more often and every 10-20 minutes........... the end.

An extract from the Australian Government's Stay Smart Website discussing Social Media Privacy and how to be careful online:

Top tips
  • Always type your social networking website address into your browser.
  • Never use the same password that you use for your bank or email accounts. Have a different password for each social networking site so that if one password is stolen, not all of your accounts will be at risk.
  • Don't automatically click on links in 'friend request' emails you receive. Genuine friend requests will appear on your home page on your social networking site.
  • Be careful about how much personal information you post online. Use privacy settings to control who has access to your information.
  • Be careful about the amount of information that you reveal to people you don't know. It is easy to create a fake profile online and people are not always who they say they are.
  • Stop and think before you write a message or post pictures. Ask yourself if the information you are sharing is something you want your future employers, friends or family to see. Even items you delete can remain on the Internet for years.

An article on Social Media Etiquette:
http://www.linkedstrategies.com/social-media-etiquette-10-commonly-overlooked-best-practices-in-social-media/
Extract from the above link:
  1. Do unto others – “Please” and “Thank You’s” do go a long way. If you wanted to be respected you first have to give respect.
  2. Be nice – Remember, what you do on the internet is a reflection of you and quite possibly your business. Be positive and encouraging. No one wants to be associated with a negative individual.
  3. Don’t be too quick to judge – You know the old saying: “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? It still holds true today. When meeting individuals online, you should strike up a conversation, get to know them a bit before you judge who or what they are. In social media and in marketing, relationships matter. Start building yours today!
  4. Be respectful – Just because you are “hiding” behind a computer doesn’t give you free reign to act as you please. You still need to treat people properly.
  5. When marketing-use a first name – If you want someone to actually respond back to you, you need to make your connection more personable. Using their first name is a great way to start!
  6. Don’t be annoying – Don’t continue to send emails out every hour on the hour. It’s annoying and clutters up one’s inbox. If you don’t hear back from an individual right away, give them some time. Some people aren’t surgically attached to their computers like some of us! :)
  7. Play by the rules – Be respectful of group and community rules. Follow the terms of use of the social platform you are using.
  8. Don’t abuse your network – Use your network the right way. Don’t post how your day is going to your network all day long. It’s unprofessional and quite frankly, unnecessary. If you must post something, post something of significance that your network can actually use, like a great social media link you just found or some sort of tip, advice or quote you find significant.
  9. Add a profile picture – Everyone likes to “see” who they are talking to. It’s easy to do and having a picture on file does make you look more reputable and professional.
  10. Above all – don’t be too quick to react.  People are trying to figure out the most proper ways to communicate and millions are entering as rookies on a monthly basis, so show patience, kindness and assume those trying to interact are naive before you assume they are malicious.
Social Media Copyright:
An extract from http://www.legalzoom.com/intellectual-property-rights/copyrights/copyright-issues-social-media:
Social Media Companies Exposure to Copyright Infringement Claims
Though this is a developing area of the law, it would appear social media companies may indeed be held accountable for the actions of their users. For example, when a Web-based service encourages copyright infringement, the company opens itself up to claims.
Alternatively, some original authors would rather have their works posted by users of social media as it increases their exposure—and in turn, increases their sales. Many businesses are all too happy to see their products reposted in social media outlets. And some writers may encourage links to their articles, posted in the hopes of being commissioned for other work.
Social media is still in its infancy with its rapid growth largely occurring in the last 10 years. Whether you are frequently posting or reposting on these sites, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the power of your click goes beyond something so seemingly simple. Social media users need to be aware that there are consequences, both good and bad, to marketing within this medium. A cogent plan outlining a strategy, and more importantly, specific guidelines for use, can be helpful in protecting against unwanted situations.

Work is hard

I am finding the assessment tasks (work teams, cataloging, etc) really hard. The tasks are due by the end of the month, but I am afraid that they'll be too hard for me to complete (especially the work teams one) or I'll be given a resubmit on at least one of them, and I've nearly completed this course.

The last thing I want to do is redo cert 4.

Does anyone else agree?

Notes for today, 20th of May 2014

Some notes for everyone today...

1. Windows XP is no longer supported. Check http://www.microsoft.com/apac/news/FarewellWindowsXP.aspx for more details. Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 are supported- the last one mentioned is the latest.

2. Today is National Librarians Day; there will be a 2-hour presentation today at Victoria University's Nicholson Street Campus in Beanland Building (Room 128).

3. Apparently Pamela Anderson was sexually abused and raped as a child/teen www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/celebrity/mag-watch/pamela-anderson-reveals-sex-abuse-20140519-zrgmy.html. Now I DO feel sorry for her. And, on this awful topic, a 10 year old girl has been raped by an 8 year old boy (with the poor girl being held down by the boy's sister) in Oklahoma Cityhttp://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2014/05/19/09/47/10-year-old-girls-claims-she-was-raped-by-eight-year-old-boy. I blame our porn culture for this horrible news! AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

4. Ian Rogers is an awesome teacher. IAN ROGERS IS AN AWESOME TEACHER. .rechaet emosewa na si sregoR naI 9-1-14 18-15-7-5-18-19 9-19 1-14 1-23-5-19-15-13-5 20-5-1-3-8-5-18. Of course, the last 2 sentences are exactly the same thing, it's just that one is written backwards and another is written in number code...

5. The AFL is rigged in favour of interstate teams, something I long suspected, which is why I hate it and no longer want to hear about it.

Look after yourselves and keep an eye out on everybody else.

Hello again! Competency tasks

Hello peoples,

Kathryn again.

I am almost done with Certificate 4, and will probably do the diploma as well. But I'm struggling with Customer Service ATM (struggling with the competency tasks) and I also have done some of the Work Teams Competency Task 2 as well. At the time of writing this, I hope Paula Jones (OAM) allows us extra time in class this morning to complete our Acquisitions task! :)

P.S... DO NOT talk to me about TV last night as I will have a gutful of it.

Bye.

Favourite web sites

Here is a list of all of my favourite web sites-
realestate.com.au (has houses for sale)
vicsig.net (history on Melbourne trains and trams)
youtube.com (especially youtube vids like LA Beast and Simple Cooking Channel)
mykitchenrules.com.au (TV show on channel 7)
Google Maps

I can spend quite some time on these websites; for instance, I like looking at houses for sale on realestate.com.au, and looking at the house plans which sometimes pop up. I would love to buy my own home but in many cases these days, the houses cost more than they should.
A house plan, courtesy of realestate.com.au

I like looking at the history of trains on vicsig.net, this page has a few articles on Melbourne trains and their history. I like knowing exactly how old the trains we go on are:
courtesy of vicsig.net

On youtube.com, I like looking at funny videos (LA Beast eating challenges, Russell Gilbert, Hey Hey, O Kitchen My Kitchen etc), cooking videos and some vintage ads.
I can spend hours on YouTube and other websites, I could go on but I won't!

Friday class

The wonderful Tim Dolby has let us all know that Friday's Information Industry class is finished (and, yes, I have passed!) So, from this Friday, we have 3 classes of Customer Services with Jan Murray (I think). God willing this subject is easy...

Looking forward to our Easter holidays!

Go Helena and Vikki- My Kitchen Rules

Go Helena and Vikki!

You can beat Harry and Christo in Sudden Death! Yes, you can do it!

Put your brains to work and knuckle down as hard as you can, and you'll be back cooking in Wednesday night's episode! And keep knuckling down too! Shameful that wretched Josh and Danielle didn't go straight there with their RAW chicken!

Chloe and Kelly, prepare to shiver in fear! The twins are now going to be ON FIRE! You two think of falling asleep at the wheel and you will be SORRY!

Go Helena and Vikki

Harry and Christo (they don't deserve to go there, but anyway...)

Josh and Danielle you cannot cook...

Chloe and Kelly are idiots

The lovely Carly and Tresne made some nice egg nests
